Bauhaus
Reconstruction of a legend
The Bauhaus ensemble, in Dessau, between December 1926 and October 1932 the home of the legendary Dessau School of Design, has been restored as true as possible to the original.
That Berker is devoting greater attention to the topic of the Bauhaus is in fact no coincidence. In a glass display cabinet in one of the basement areas of the building there is a genuine find from the Golden Era of the room which once held the heartbeat of progressive architecture: the round "glass facing" a light switch from the Director's office, dated from the year 1926. Right next to it: a push-button in traditional electric brown, with the engraving "Licht" (light); on the head of its white plastic button, also from 1926. Manufacturer: Berker, Schalksmuehle, Germany.
Given the high standards that Monika Markgraf, in her capacity as Director of Architectural Research at Bauhaus Dessau, has set for reconstructing the entire ensemble as true as possible to the original, it is no wonder that almost 80 years later switches and socket outlets from Berker are being installed in the Director's office of the Dessau Bauhaus. After all the historically faithful "Glasserie" developed at the end of the 1970s fits in there just as ideally as the "Serie 1930", which was designed a few years ago in consultation with the Dessau Architectural Research department.
