Mobile Living

Mobile Home

At first glance, the design is both novel and unusual. On a closer look it is completely logical and really impressive. The designer, Werner Aisslinger, asked himself why so many roof areas in large cities with a 360 degree view have such a sad, dark existence? How would it be if we used these excellent unused spaces for a type of mobile home? How about mobile immovable property, which you can take with you from place to place just like furniture and belongings? The idea was so plausible that Berker decided very early on to support this visionary project. This is how the Loftcube came into existence, which Berker is presenting live at the Light + Building 2008. The facade of the rounded glass living cube consists of a wooden construction with a plastic coating from vacuum-formed, white layers of polystyrol, which is reminiscent of an aircraft component because of its aerodynamic curves. The Loftcube comes in two sizes, 39 and 55 square meters and in two different models which are all fitted with Berker Integro and Berker Master Control. It is ideal for relocating: the Loftcube fits into two standard 40 foot containers, can be erected within four days and with a weight of only nine tons can be easily transported by crane or transport helicopter.

Roughly 11,000 potential buyers from 50 countries worldwide have already contacted the Loftcube founders. According to the designer, those people interested in his "mobile home" are "creative people, free-lancers and also senior citizens who would like an interesting home for their retirement, not as a primary residence but as an addition, on the rooftop in a large city". Models of this modern home are already on the roof of Universal Music in Berlin, in Amsterdam, in the Salone di Mobile in Milan and now on the site of Light + Building 2008. Naturally - as it is a mobile home - only temporarily.
